Dear Mr. Yost:

Professor Felix Bloch of Stanford has referred to me a
letter from John Malone replying to a letter from Professor
Richard Wilson of Harvard concerning the California Nuclear
Initiative. I am now chairman of the Stanford Chapter of SENSE
(Scientists for Enlightenment on Nuclear Sources of Energy),
and we would like any opportunity to try to persuade the State
Bar or any other organization to take a position against the
initiative.

We believe that nuclear energy is safe enough and necessary
for California to even maintain its standard of living given
the impending exhaustion of oil and gas supplies. We also
believe that the life style is a matter of individual choice
and should not be determined ruling out each source of energy
individually without public awareness of consequences.

Finally, we think that nuclear energy is best regulated
at the federal level because of the large costs incurred in meeting
regulations, and it is especially bad to regulate it by initiatives
that cannot be amended except by new initiatives with there attendant
delay and imprecision.

We look forward to any opportunity to explain our reasons
for these beliefs.
